Round 2 – Tantanoola v Hatherleigh
By Kelly |
Last week we headed to Tantanoola with mixed results. Under 11’s The scene was set for a good day at Tantanoola with both sides fielding great numbers, At training we’ve been working on tackling which was evident on Saturday, the pressure was outstanding, well done boys on a great team effort. Harvey Jones laid a “Danny Southern” inspired tackle and gained plenty more possessions, Bowie was in everything, Paddy Chay led the way all day showing great skill and awareness ($5 award) and was fully supported by Hudson’s defensive pressure in only his second game for the eagles earning him the canteen award. Junior Colts Greasy conditions didn’t seem to bother the boys as they were quick out of the blocks to have 4 goals on the board in no time. It was the Bradley brothers doing all the damage as it seemed like they were having their own little shootout. Luke Macgregor was on the end of some very good ruck work from big Ivan Buhlmann to give the forwards many opportunities to score. A solid four quarter performance from the whole team made it very difficult to pick best players as all the kids managed to have an influence on the game in one way or another. Hard running and solid tackling saw Luke Macgregor named best (Denton’s Sportspower Award) , Jake Wight 2nd best (Stumpy Award) with his normal cool calm head, Alex Buhlmann rucked all day and chipped in with 3 goals to be 3rd best (Pete Walters Award) , Kade Bradley 4th best( HFC Ladies Committee Award) covering a huge amount ground and kicking 2 goals while he was outdone by his little bro who kicked four and only played half a game to earn 5th best (Hath Sport & Rec Steak Award) , well done Frazer. There is still plenty to work on but we are improving each week and as long as we come off online slots smiling after each game win or lose then that’s all that matters.Looking forward to another big game today against the Hawks.  Go Eagles. Senior Colts - The senior colts came up against a very determined Tantanoola side that were desperate to give their home fans a good showing but in a very scrappy and tough affair the boys won by 31 points. Best players on the day were Mitch Pulmer (Denton’s Sportspower Award) who controlled the backline and later the midfield, Brodie Fabris (Stump Award) in the ruck was again incredible and is one to watch for the future, Lewis walker (Subway Award) showed excellent skills on his wing, Brad Wight (HFC Ladies Committee Award) led from the front all day and Jez Jones ( Hatherleigh Sport & Rec Steak Award) played one of his best games for the club. It was a real all round performance and Tantanoola fought hard the whole day as we expected but the team will have to improve again before we play a strong Kongorong side this week. B Grade – With good numbers on the track and a few new faces it was a great week but still hard to pick a side with players unavailable for other commitments so we headed to Tantanoola to take on the reigning premiers. Once again preparation before the game was ok, players were ready early and looked keen to have a crack. We started ok and were just down at the first break which was pleasing but 2nd quarter started and we went missing and got a football lesson from a more confident and determined fitter side and continued to be missing for the remainder of the game…….. So, we have to get fitter and better to be able to get that first win! Better players in his first game for the club were Kerran Wingard (Prince of Wales Award) who showed he will soon play in the late game with a couple more hitouts. Tim ‘Muff’ Merrett (Millicent 4WD systems Award) was his usual, getting kicks around the ground, Dylan Jones (Millicent Golf Award), Dan Sutherland (Thursday Night Tea Award) , Jason Uzzel back to the club after a few years and the big Tommy Agnew so hope we can get that first win today as we will not be keen to put up a display like that again!! A Grade – A disappointing result last Saturday with not much going right all day. After an acceptable 1st quarter, we went with a 3-4 goal breeze in the second only to see the rain come and produce difficult slippery conditions. Injury again to some players and not good use of the ball had us level with Tant at half time. Tant had the better 3rd quarter with us kicking 2 goals into the breeze to be trailing by 19 points at 3 quarter time. With 2 players out of the game, some positional changes were made but we couldn’t narrow the gap and went down by 3 goals. Overuse of the ball and some more injury to players all contributing to the loss, we never really looked like winning. This week is a must win before a 2 game break. Best wishes and speedy recovery to Jed Telfer playing his first senior game and resulting in a broken wrist and to other injured players Wangas, Brett Watson and Sax. Best players were hard to find for 4 quarters but Matt Fabris (Somerset Hotel Award) was a standout at half back. , Bruce (Prince of Wales Award) was great deep in defence and Saxon Ellis (Tony Egan’s Mensland Award) gave his all on the wing (and finished with a sore wing!)  While Todd Watto (Beaurepaires Awards), Sully, Telf, Beggsy, Joe Ferg and Snork all had their moments.
